What is all of this talk about red wine and weight loss and is there any truth to red wine helping you in losing excess fat and contributing to you becoming fit? There is even a book about this very topic, titled "French wine for a flat belly" by Thomas Newman. We've all heard of the benefits of resveratrol, a chemical found in red wine that has all kinds of claims about being anti-tumor and reducing the risk of cancer, promoting healthy, delayed aging, etc.
Well, that is actually related to this and resveratrol, as well as other antioxidant chemicals in red wine such as ellagic acid and polyphenols which you can find in green tea, raspberries, strawberries, walnuts, grapes and more, contribute to not just protecting your cells from damage caused by oxidants and to your immune system but also to your metabolism and apparently how fat is oxidized and deposited into your body. What is important to note and to remember is that most of the evidence comes from animal trials and there is little to no evidence in humans for ellagic acid actually promoting weight loss. In reality, the facts are very different than the over-exaggerated claims that you read online. Some manufacturers of dietary supplements will say all kinds of things to make a profit and sell their products but you must make sure that you know the real facts. Ellagic acid and this serves as an example of the benefits that it can offer, was shown to reduce levels of fat tissue in mice and reduce resistin which in humans is associated with not just obesity but also, and this makes sense, of course, diabetes, heart disease, etc. However, again as I've said the evidence comes from mice and so we need proof in humans and multiple studies to support such claims that are being made by humans and which are unfounded. What ellagic acid may also promote in the human body is a decrease in the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream which is also beneficial for weight management. There is also evidence of ellagic acid inhibiting adipocyte differentiation which is a pretty fancy term and what it refers to is energy balance related to the adipose tissue and the formation of adipocytes from precursor cells. This again is beneficial for weight loss and especially weight management. It can get pretty complicated with some words that a lot of people are not familiar with but really, you won't lose weight by drinking more red wine or eating more fruits and veggies with ellagic acid and other strong, potent antioxidants in them. That is because it's simply not nearly enough to promote weight loss, it doesn't make up for sedentary habits and unhealthy eating habits. Can red wine help you lose weight, really? The answer is, unfortunately, no and also it's complicated.Personally, I hate complicated things, I always try to keep things simple, I don't like it when they become complicated which is why I don't use supplements and why I just eat healthily and exercise regularly, I know that it works, I know it's healthy, I can see and feel the results and I do not need anything else but some people do, for various reasons. Red wine has many claims about it, such as delaying aging, helping with offering various health benefits and now helping with weight loss. Most people probably know of resveratrol, a powerful chemical found in red wine, and obviously in grapes. There are many different antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, raspberries are also a great source or walnuts. It's been proposed that these antioxidants contribute to lowering the risk of cancer, to protecting cells from oxidation and there is evidence of this but as always, online claims are over exaggerated. There is almost no evidence that these antioxidants, resveratrol, ellagic acid and more, can actually prevent cancer or treat cancer in humans but the claims are still being made by many dietary supplements. So, can the red wine help you lose weight? Depends on what you understand by help. Did you know that caffeine can stimulate the metabolism, helping you burn more calories but also that it can improve your endurance and make you perform better and last longer, thus you can exercise better and also burn more calories, and that it can lower appetite? Caffeine is, in fact, one of the best supplements for weight loss and the most available to anyone and everyone. Does this mean that you can lose weight just by drinking coffee more often? No, and actually drinking it too often causes health problems. Like I said, it's complicated. Caffeine can obviously, clearly help, no doubt about it, it is great and I use it. It will not, however, make you fit, not without you making changes to your diet and becoming more active. Well, the same can be said for red wine. There's some evidence, again very scarce, that it can inhibit fat cells and that it can convert "bad fat" into "good fat" and help with fat oxidation which can prevent obesity, help with weight management, etc. Not very likely when a person eats unhealthily and is sedentary, that's the whole point and as long as you understand that then yes, red wine can help but not a whole lot. Popular right now on this topic is "French wine for a flat belly" by Thomas Newman which is what more or less inspired this article.
