Probiotic bacteria are a big part of your microbiome and it is important that you keep it that way. The whole purpose behind probiotic supplements is to bring balance to a disrupted or imbalanced gut flora. The gut flora refers to the community of microorganisms in your gut/intestines specifically and the microbiome refers to not just
the gut but all the bacteria and other microorganisms in your whole body but the gut is the most important because that is where most microorganisms and bacteria are, tens of trillions, possibly more than how many cells your body is made of, this is still being debated though. So why is it important to keep it that way and what does that mean? Well, there are good bacteria and bad bacteria in your body, a healthy individual should have more good than bad and the good will provide health benefits and inhibit or supress the bad ones which means a smaller risk of infection for you and a better protection for you, immune support. The good ones are the probiotics, the bad ones I guess are refered to commonly as pathogens and they cause bacterial infections, an example of bad or harmful bacterium is E.coli, another example can be Clostridium botulinum, both are a threat to your health and can cause harmful infections in your body but only if they manage to grow in your body's enviroment and to reproduce. Your community of probiotics supresses them, preventing them from doing those things and from being harmful, and your immune system of course does the same thing. These probiotics however can die naturally or they can get eliminated by factors in your lifestyle, such as stress or antibiotics. Antibiotics are like a double edged sword, I think that is a good way to describe them because they help improve and protect your health by eliminating bad bacteria and eliminating/fighting an infection and helping your body to treat it but at the same time they cause damage to your gut and your digestion by killing the good community of bacteria in your body, the probiotics, which can also make you more susceptible to bacterial infections because the probiotics inhibit the bad bacteria and in their absence those bad bacteria can grow or reproduce. Also there is the possibility for the bacteria that are exposed to antibiotics to grow stronger, more resistant therefore becoming harder to be dealt with which is more trouble for you and your health. Probiotic supplements such as the one I used last time which was Perfect Biotics which I ordered from Probiotic America, fix or treat the disruption that antibiotics or other factors can create in your gut flora and any other problems that come with it, such as diarrhea or irregular bowel movements.
